Research Paper: Unraveling Digital Authoritarianism in Myanmar by PICAIS Alumni

Dr. Nwet Kay Khine, a distinguished PICAIS research fellow at the University of Passau, has published an intriguing paper titled "Digital Rights in Post-Coup Myanmar: Enabling Factors for Digital Authoritarianism" in the Journal of Human Rights and Peace Studies.

Drawing on extensive research conducted during her fellowship at the University of Passau, Dr. Khine's paper offers a comprehensive analysis of the impact of digital authoritarianism on citizens' freedom of expression in Myanmar, analyzing factors shaped by the country's digital development agenda. It attributes the rise of digital authoritarianism to the nation's digital development agenda, propelled by government initiatives, international development projects, and a growing digital market through public-private partnerships.

Dr. Khine was one of the first PICAIS Fellows from November 2022 to April 2023, doing research for her project proposal titled "The Emergence of Digital Authoritarianism in Myanmar: A Study of Chinese and Russian Influences as a Laboratory for a New Regime Type" at the Chair of Development Politics led by Prof. Dr. Wolfram Schaffar. Currently, Dr. Khine is based at the Regional Centre for Social Science and Sustainable Development at Chiang Mai University in Thailand.

We congratulate Dr. Khine on her significant research contribution and look forward to continuing our collaboration.
