University of Passau, May 20 - 22 2026
From 20 to 22 May 2026, around 20 researchers from numerous European countries gathered at the University of Passau for the second PICAIS-funded network conference, “Religious Identities in Central and Eastern Europe.” The event focused on current research questions concerning memory cultures, religion, and identity, while also advancing collaborative academic projects.
The conference was organised by Prof. Dr. Sandra Huebenthal, PD Dr. Benedikt J. Collinet, and Prof. Dr. Thomas Wünsch. In addition to presenting new research approaches, participants discussed ongoing collaborations, including the development of a Master's programme in the Caucasus region and an internationally oriented doctoral programme in Passau.
Particular attention was given to the ways European societies engage with their socialist pasts. The discussions highlighted the close connections between religion, politics, and culture in processes of remembrance, societal resilience, and peacebuilding. Interactive formats such as a poster exhibition and several open spaces also provided opportunities for networking and the development of new project ideas.
The conference underscored the importance of Central Europe as a bridge for international collaboration in the humanities, cultural studies, and theology. At the conclusion of the conference, participants reaffirmed their commitment to continuing the network. A further meeting is already planned for 2027 to deepen existing collaborations and initiate new joint projects.
