Immersive Visual Analytics for the Identification of Turbulent Flow Structures in CFD

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is widely used to analyze how fluids such as air and liquids behave in engineering systems. These simulations produce large three-dimensional datasets describing velocity, pressure, and turbulent flow structures. However, these data are typically examined using two-dimensional visualizations, which can make it difficult to interpret complex flow features such as vortices, wake regions, and recirculation zones. This project investigates whether immersive visual analytics can provide a clearer, more intuitive way to explore CFD data by enabling interactive analysis in a fully 3D environment. The study focuses on turbulent flow around a circular cylinder, a well-known benchmark problem characterized by complex and unsteady vortex dynamics. CFD simulations will generate representative datasets, which will be analyzed using both conventional and immersive visualization approaches. The main objective is to evaluate whether immersive visualization improves the identification and interpretation of flow structures compared to traditional methods. The results are expected to demonstrate the potential of immersive analytics for engineering applications and contribute to the development of more effective approaches for analyzing complex simulation data.
